Cards of Change

As a self-employed person trying to keep my head above water “in this economy”, I’m continually impressed with and inspired by people who have so much more than I have on the line who have decided, “Fuck it. I’m going to start my own thing”. I became self employed last year almost by accident, and to be honest, it was mostly unrelated to the down-turning economy. But many others (and more and more) who have been laid off or have seen their industries squeezed by the hard times are striking out on their own to move that back-burner idea they’ve had for years to the front burner.

Cardsofchange is a website devoted to these people. As the About Us of their website says, it’s “a place where the glass is always half-full. A destination where all the bad news of the day takes a back seat to stories of individual success.”

The mission of CardsOfChange is to collect business cards and stories from people who have recently felt the effects of the economy and connect those people with new opportunities. The ulterior mission of the site is to cull the best and most uplifting stories into a book, which is being put together right now.

2 fun reasons why I enjoyed Pixar’s “Up”

up-pic-1After seeing and hearing a lot of great reviews and media hype, I went and saw Up tonight (in 3D!) with my friend Shayna. Two very cool inclusions by the directors and writers of Up made the Pixar film particularly enjoyable.

The first treat in Up was the name-dropping of an Oakland ice cream parlor that is literally two blocks away from the Earshot Presents Clubhouse. Fentons, which turns 115 in July, is not only mentioned in the middle of Up, but it is also visually featured towards the end of the film (although, aside from the distinctive logo, it doesn’t bare much resemblance). As it turns out, Up director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera live in Oakland and have young children they take to Fentons. The Piedmont Avenue creamery is also a popular stop for Pixar employees, who work at the Oakland production facility only ten minutes away.

mothSecond, in a scene in which one of the main characters is watching a home shopping show on his television, the film uses the audio of one of my very favorite YouTubes ever. The viral video from which they excerpted is one that Earshot Presents shared with you last February. To give you a hint, it involves a digital camera, a horse, and a butterfly. Or is it a moth? Up cuts off the clip before the confusion sets in. It was hilarious to hear it nonetheless!

Best barrels ever get Huntington surfer pitted

Storm conditions at Huntington Beach create the “BEST BARRELS EVER, DUDE. Just like…you pull in and you just get spit right out of em? And you just drop in and just smack the lip and WHHHAAAPAA. Drop down? Say BBBWAAAHHAAHHHA. Then after that you just drop in and just ride the barrel and get PITTED, so pitted, like that.”
